The recent European Parliament hearings felt, at times, like must-watch reality TV for those of us who follow EU policy – two of my favourite things. These session has their far share of cringeworthy moments, but others showcased some moments of the best “job interviews” I’ve seen. Here’s what stood out for me from some of the hearings:
1. Green Deal: Ambition meets reality
The Green Deal’s bold targets are still front and centre, but there’s a noticeable pivot toward pragmatism. The incoming Commission seems laser-focused on balancing ambition with practical solutions. Competetiveness is the buzzword and the message from the hearings is clear: achieving the Green Deal’s goals requires a solid grip on the people-planet-profit trifecta. It is less about ideals and more about making the sustainable food system transition work for everyone.
2. Innovation needs action
In our sector, there is no overstating the urgency to adapt regulations for emerging technologies like New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) and biopesticides. The EU can’t afford to let innovation outpace regulation – it’s a surefire way to fall behind on the global stage. If Europe wants to lead economically and sustainably, swift regulatory action is a non-negotiable. Ambition alone won’t cut it, we need a framework that keeps up with the change that is happening.
