Genetically Modified Soybeans and food security

Description

GM soybeans are vital for Europe’s livestock sector, providing the majority of the protein needed for feed. With the EU nearly 70% dependent on imports, any disruption would create severe supply gaps, driving up feed costs by billions of euros and putting pressure on farmers, food prices, and competitiveness.

Yet today, EU authorisation procedures for GM feed imports are slow, costly, and out of step with global best practice. Despite decades of safe use and scientific approval, products face years of delay and duplication. Simplifying and streamlining the system—without compromising safety—is essential to secure Europe’s feed supply, protect consumers from higher prices, and support a resilient agri-food chain.
