Fluorinated active substances are currently important components of a farmer’s toolkit to manage pests. They are well-recognised for enhancing the biological activities of active substances and hence reduce the amount of pesticides used. This is part of the reason why there has been a dramatic increase in the number of fluorinated active substances in the past three decades. In the period 1998–2020, 60-70% of newly launched, or registered, agrochemicals are organofluorine compounds. Maintaining and rotating the limited pool of agrochemicals with different and new modes of action is important so we do not endanger the sustainability of agricultural productivity.
We understand the restriction proposal aims at addressing generic concerns over the mobility, bioaccumulation, persistence and effects of PFAS in the environment. We would like to recall that we already have existing specialised and targeted provisions in EU Regulation 1107/2009 that provide robust and effective control of active substances in relation to the environment – including the alleged properties and effects of PFAS.
