Review on the available scientific literature and industry studies on guttation as potential exposure route for honey bees

Description

With the increased awareness of the importance of pollinating insect species in light of potential risks caused by plant protection products (PPP) EFSA proposed a new guidance on honey bees, bumblebees and solitary bees in 2013.
In this review we evaluated field studies on guttation, which were conducted by the industry for
registration purposes between 2010 and 2017. The aim was to find a realistic estimate (90th percentile)
for the occurrence of guttation in a certain crop species as well as an estimate for the number of honey bees foraging on guttation water (90th percentile) on a certain crop. Residue contents in guttation water were also briefly summarised. Furthermore, data from peer-reviewed publications (open literature) with relevance to guttation and the exposure of honey bees were evaluated with the same aims.
